Kaljurand: U.S. reaction to election cyber attacks stands out

Estonia’s representative in the UN’s cyber experts work group, former foreign minister Marina Kaljurand, said that the United States’ countermeasures against Russia for its meddling in the U.S. presidential election were notable, and probably had taken into account the next president’s announcement to review American relations with Russia.

Countermeasures of US against Russian cyber attacks are notable

“It is the first time that one country is blaming another country for cyber attacks and uses real, public and extensive countermeasures against cyber attacks organized or supported or ordered or financed by that country,” Kaljurand writes. She adds that Estonia did the same in 2007, but the scale of this year’s attacks and the attacks that took place then are different.

Interview With Estonian Foreign Minister, Marina Kaljurand

Marina Kaljurand is Estonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Prior to becoming Foreign Minister in July 2015, she was a long-time Estonian diplomat, and an ambassador to the United States, Mexico, Canada, Russia, Kazakhstan and Israel. Her time as ambassador to Russia from 2005-2008 was particularly tumultuous, as she presided over a period of extreme tensions with the Kremlin, which climaxed in the 2007 cyberattack. Ms. Kaljurand agreed to an email interview with me following her October 14, 2015 speech at the University of Oxford.
